If you are wondering how to get your teen to do their homework, my guess is that homework has become a source of conflict.

How would you like to not have to worry about your son or daughter’s grades?

How would you like to never have an augment again over homework?

How would you like to know that your teenager is being responsible and getting the most they can out of their education?

This would be a good thing, wouldn’t it?

This is possible.

In this episode, I will share three steps you can take to lay a foundation for getting your teenager to take responsibility for their homework and eliminating this conflict.

Step 1 - Reframe

The first action I am recommending is to shift your perspective around your teen’s homework. This goes back to our discussions about shifting from a control-based mindset to an empowerment-based mindset.

Step 2 - Build connection.

Your ability to influence or coach your teenager  is directly related to the quality of your connection with them. Before you have a conversation about transferring the responsibility for their grades, spend at least a week being very intentional about deepening your connection.

Step 3 - Transfer responsibility

After spending some time building a connection, have a conversation that transfers the responsibility for homework and grades to your teenager. Announce that you are available to support them and that you believe they are old enough now to take responsibility for their results in school. They are their grades.

The biggest challenge for most parents in making this transition is giving up their need to control what their teenager is doing and moving to an empowerment-based mindset.

Which step do you feel will be the most challenging?

  • Shifting and keeping your mindset on empowerment
  • Building connection
  • Having the transition conversation
